Cattle Car in Birkenau Camp

Cattle Car in Birkenau Camp

People were brought to the camps in these cattle cars. They were packed up to one hundred per car, without food or water. Many travelled in these conditions for up to four days on their journey to the camps.

1. p67: “At the station, the foreboding sight of rows and rows of cattle cars, drab, windowless boxes with doors agape, waiting in sinister silence. On the platform, a row of SS soldiers, stiff, sticklike figures snapping orders. 'Eighty-five people to a wagon! Move! Move! In die waggonen! Into the wagons!' The count. Eighty-five men, women, children, infants, eldery, crippled. 'No questions, no questions. Move on, move on - into the wagons.'
P68 “Now the doors slide shut plunging the car into total darkness. Panic grips my bowels. …….it is dark and chilly. And I tremble with fear.”
