The Entrance Gate into Auschwitz Concentration and Extermination Camp

The Entrance Gate into Auschwitz Concentration and Extermination Camp

"Our march to the right slows to a halt. A tall, metal gate looms darkly ahead. Above it huge metal letters arch like a sinister crown: ARBEIT MACHT FREI!
The immense portals of the gate open and we march through them into an enclosure with tall wire fences. Several rows of wire. Plain wire fence flanked by barbed wire. It is growing lighter rapidly. And colder. The eerie light of the watchtowers grows dimmer. Rows of barracks, long , flat buildings on both sides of a black pebble strewn road enclosed in barbed wire. it’s a road without an end. It stretches far into the fog. And we march. Motorcycles, SS officers: Dogs" ‘Marschieren. Los. Los!’
